Dr David Allen

I came to Queen’s in 2007 to take up the position of Tutor in New Testament Studies, having previously completed my PhD on the use of the Old Testament in the book of Hebrews. Prior to that, I had a variable career as a youthworker and computer programmer, working particularly with mainframe computers and the infamous year-2000 compliance. I have taught at a number of HE institutions, including the University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews.

Roles at Queen's

At Queen’s, I presently hold the role of Academic Dean, which involves attending to matters of academic quality and standards, and ensuring that we maintain high quality provision across our various academic programmes.

External roles and responsibilities

I am a lay person, but committed to the life of the local church, and am a member of St. Columba's, Banners Gate.

I am an external examiner for another HE institution, and have served as external panellist on a number of programme validation boards; I have also examined a number of PhD theses.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research interests and supervision

Much of my research concerns the way in which the New Testament uses the Hebrew Scriptures, and the intertextual reading strategies this generates; I am regular member of the British Old Testament in the New Seminar and co-edited the recent JSNT volume on this subject. I recently completed a volume on the use of the Old Testament in the accounts of Jesus’ death, and edited a volume on methodologies in the NT's use of the Jewish Scriptures. I also have a particular interest in the Epistle to the Hebrews, and am working on a project on the thirteenth chapter of that text.

I am a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Tyndale Fellowship.

I currently advise and supervise a number of students at both Masters and doctoral levels, on a variety of matters relating to biblical interpretation. I would welcome enquiries from those interested in:
