Revd Dr Jeanette Hartwell

I have been the Lichfield Link Tutor at Queen’s since September 2015, and am a member of the Centre for Ministerial Formation. Alongside my role at Queen’s I am Director of Reader Training in the diocese of Lichfield. I teach biblical studies (mainly Hebrew Bible) and modules relating to Anglican identity and practice.

After leaving the University of Aston with a degree in managerial studies (1988-92), I originally trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant, and worked in both the private and public sector. I commenced ordination training at Queen's in 2005 and was ordained Deacon in 2007 and Priest in 2008 in Lichfield Diocese. My PhD focused on the portrayal of women in the Book of Proverbs, combining a feminist approach with an exploration of poetic devices used in biblical poetry.

I am part of the Centre for Ministerial Development. Part of my remit is to ensure the smooth running of the delivery of modules at Shallowford House, a centre of teaching in the Diocese of Lichfield, where Reader candidates and Ordained Local Ministers undertake their training.  

External roles and responsibilities

Prior to my role at Queen’s I served as a Team Vicar in the Smestow Vale Team ministry in the diocese of Lichfield with responsibility for two semi-rural churches and adult education in the team.  

I have served on Diocesan Synod, and stood for election to General Synod. I am a member of WATCH and the Society of Biblical Literature.

Research interests

My research interests lie in the Hebrew Bible and particularly the portrayal of women therein. My PhD ‘Wisdom, Strange or somewhere in between: in search of a real woman in the Book of Proverbs’ (January 2017) concentrates on the portrayal of the ‘Strange Woman’, the ‘contentious wives’ and the ‘mothers’ of Proverbs, exploring the poetic devices of the book from a feminist perspective. I am a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and presented a paper at their international conference entitled ‘At the window of my house: exploring the identity of the onlooker in Proverbs 7’ (St Andrews, July 2013).
