Who is it for?

This postgraduate degree is ideal for people engaged in lay or ordained ministry as well as professionals in various industries (eg: charity, healthcare, social, teaching). The courses aim to provide a flexible but focused path to enhance and deepen theological proficiency and expertise. The flexibility offered by online learning allows you to engage with the course and your tutors from virtually anywhere in the world whilst conveniently fitting the training around your professional and personal commitments.

Programme Structure

This MA is validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards scheme and provides two pathways:

• Specialism in Biblical Studies
• Specialism in Christian Faith and Contemporary Life

NB: You can choose your specialism in Year 2

The course content will relate theological knowledge to your professional & personal circumstances. In the first year, all students study three core modules (60 credits). In the second year, based on your chosen specialism, you will explore 3 modules (60 credits). The final year is dedicated to a dissertation on a theological topic of your own choice in relation to your ministry and chosen specialism. You will be guided in ways to research important material to develop your own idea. We usually offer three online seminars per module.

If you are unsure about whether you want to do a full MA, you might want to enrol on our PGCert programme as a starting point to achieve the MA. The first year, or either second year pathway, can be studied on its own, alone as a one-year Certificate.

Modules

The programme covers seven modules (Level-7), studied part-time over three years, for a total of 180 credits.

Year 1 (60 credits)

• The Bible & Christian Faith
• Theologies in Global Perspective
• Research Methods

Year 2 (60 credits)

Specialism in Biblical Studies

• Advanced New Testament
• Advanced Old Testament
• New Testament text in Greek or Independent Research Project

Specialism in Christian Faith and Contemporary Life

• Leadership and Collaboration
• Christian Faith and the Environment*
• Adult Education and the Learning Church*

*Some courses could be substituted for alternatives if you had studied a similar module at level 6 (GradCert).

Year 3 (60 credits)

• Dissertation

Admission Requirements

Students enter the MA in TMM programme under one of the following categories:

• A good degree (or other level 6 qualification, such as a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma) in Theology, normally with an average of 60% across module results.
• Graduates (normally classed as first class or 2:1 honours) in other disciplines with experience of Theology or Religious Studies to at least undergraduate Certificate in HE level (awarded with credit or distinction, or with an overall mark of at least 60%)
• Students for whom English is their second language should have achieved a score of 7.0 in an IELTS examination, or equivalent.

Funding
