These 'illustrative pathways' combine the expectations of the Academic programme with requirements of the Church of England for those training for ordained ministry. They should give you an idea of the broad shape of the kinds of pathways on offer at Queen's.

College-based training:

Illustrative pathway - two years (Track 1)

This is a two-year full-time pathway which is designed for a ministerial candidate with little or no prior theological learning. Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Diploma of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are sometimes possible in relation to individual programmes.

Illustrative pathway – three years (Track 1)

This pathway is designed for three-year full-time candidates. The first two years of the pathway lay the foundations for ministry, with the third year focusing on strategic considerations of mission, leadership and the skills needed for future posts of responsibility. Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are some times possible in relation to individual programmes. 

Years 1 and 2 are the same as Illustrative Pathway 1. Year 3 is as follows:

Further Reflective Practice in Context (Long) 20 credits
Texts and Traditions in Christian Spirituality 20 credits
Dissertation in Theology, Ministry & Mission 40 credits
Theologies of the Majority World 10 credits
Scriptures and Spirituality beyond Boundaries 10 credits
Further Old Testament Text Study in context 10 credits
Further New Testament Text Study in context 10 credits
Illustrative pathway – three years part-time (Track 1)

It’s also possible for some students to train on the Queen’s College programme part-time. In most cases this means spreading your training over three years instead of the normal two. We focus your lectures on two days a week (normally Tuesdays and Wednesdays, including lectures on a Tuesday evening). However, students need to be flexible, as in some terms those days might need to be different, because of timetable constraints. 

Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Diploma of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are some times possible in relation to individual programmes.

Illustrative pathway – MA (Track 1)

For those with the required qualifications, the MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission is available. The MA modules are normally covered over two years and are supplemented by formational modules to meet the requirements of the Methodist Church for those training for ordained ministry.

Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Master of Arts in Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are some times possible in relation to individual programmes.

Illustrative pathway – PhD

For those with the required prior qualifications, and with the agreement of the sponsoring church, doctoral studies can be taken as part of the ordination training. The PhD pathway combines the expectations of the Academic programme with requirements of the sponsoring church for those training for ordained ministry.

This is a three-year part-time pathway which is available to all sponsored candidates, including those sponsored for Ordained Local Ministry in the Diocese of Lichfield. 

Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Diploma of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are some times possible in relation to individual programmes.

Some ordinands will pursue a two-year part-time programme.

Successful completion of this pathway leads to the Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry & Mission (120 credits) validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards. Please note that programmes can differ from year to year, and some modifications are some times possible in relation to individual programmes.
